Call for Abstracts in Engineering Geology

GSA Cordilleran Section Meeting

Honolulu, Hawaii        23 – 25 May 2017

Abstract deadline:  14 Feb. 2017

Seeking abstracts for the theme session T31. Engineering Geology of the Western United States.  While this session welcomes abstracts on all engineering geology topics, we are hoping for enough to have a subsection on Environmental and Engineering Geology in the Dynamic Coastal Zone.  The long coastline of the Cordilleran Section and the meeting location in Hawaii seem the perfect place to consider the importance of engineering geology in the dynamic geologic environment of the coastal zone.  Within the coastal zone, oceanic and terrestrial processes make the work of environmental and engineering geologists an important component in providing for our society now and in the future.

Coastlines are the ends of vital transportation routes, areas with concentrations of people and infrastructure, sites where sediments from the land are transported offshore, and the source of a variety of resources necessary to our society.  Consequently, there are many activities in which environmental and engineering geology plays a key role.  Some endeavors require environmental or engineering involvement to maintain the function of coastal facilities.  Other endeavors may address protection from tsunamis or sea cliff retreat, action in response to sea level changes, or the cleanup of environmental contamination.

For additional information on T31. Engineering Geology of the Western United States, contact:  Jerry De Graff (jdegraff@csufresno.edu), Scott Burns (burnss@pdx.edu), or Steve Martel (smartel@hawaii.edu)

A meeting flyer is available at:  Download Flyer   General information such meeting location, accommodations, field trips, short courses or other technical sessions at the Cordilleran Section meeting can be found at the following link:  http://www.geosociety.org/Sections/cord/2017mtg/
