Public Lands Comment Period

Hello AEG members,
As your Legislative Committee representative I wanted to bring to your attention some recent political activities that may result in the use of federal public lands (like our hallowed national parks) for things like say, drilling oil. There is an open public comment period right now. See a brief description of the issue below, written by a UC Davis Geology grad student Chad Trexler, and let me know if you have additional questions.
Public lands, and federal protection of them, is an issue that’s very important to me, and I’m guessing to many of you as well. As you may know, a recent executive order has called into question the Antiquities Act of 1906, which is the foundation upon which our national park system is based. It is a formative piece of legislation that laid out the framework for the protection and conservation of federal public lands.
The Department of the Interior is holding a public comment period on the current administration’s executive order to review any national monuments created in the last 20 years, including the brand new Bears Ears National Monument in southeast Utah. Also under review is our very own Berryessa Snow Mountain National Monument, as well as Carrizo Plain, Basin and Range, and Escalante Grand Staircase.
The public comment period opens on May 12th, and lasts for 15 days for Bears Ears National Monument, and 60 days for the other monuments under review. You can comment online or by snail mail.
